Plug wiring 1989 Olds 88 w/231 V-6 Sign In

Which is the number 1 plug on the 231 V6, and what is the numbering on the Type I coil/module assembly ?

The old coil was removed and tossed over a year ago, and the new coil has no markings on it at all.

I have the Haynes manual, but it doesn't have a diagram.

I need some help!

I've replaced the coil, the wires and plugs. All new.

The starter turns over, but No fire at all. I am getting nothing out of the coil.

Can you tell me the location of:

ECM fuse and the ECM

C3I fuse

I am also going to check the crank and cam sensors.

The ECM fuse is #17 in the underdash fuse box. It should be a 10 amp fuse. The cam sensor will not keep it from starting or running. The crank sensor will keep if from getting spark, as will the ignition control module (mounted under the coil packs). The crank position sensor is probably the most common failure on these engines and a good place to start.

Lauren,

The #17 fuse is good, but the typical wiring diagram calls for a C3I fuse, and I can't find any such fuse.

Also, where is the crank sensor on this engine ?

I hope I don't have to go under the ignition module. Olds put some green goop sealant under the module and it's worse than a glob of green chewing gum. It'll take a gallon of denatured alcohol to clean-up that mess.

Looking straight at the harmonic balancer, the crank sensor will be just above it, to the side. Green goop? May be to help disipate heat. (if I spelled that correctly?) Heat is the killer of anything electric.

Re: Plug wiring 1989 Olds 88 w/231 V-6 Sign In

Thanks oagain for the quick reply.

I am in the process of removing the sensor, but I have to remove the harmonic balancer to get one of the two bolts out.

I sold heat sinks and heat dissipation greases and material for 24 years as a manufacturer's rep. This green goop GM used on the bottom of (some) ignition coils might have been sold for heat dissipation, but there is no way it could be effective applied to potting compound attempting to sink heat to something resembling styrafoam.

Whatever it is, it is an unholy sticky mess.

I still can't find the fuse - C3I, which, according to Haynes schematic is in line from the ignition switch to pin M on the C3I ignition module. I have a signal tracer and will try to trace the Pink/Black wire back to the ignition switch. BUT if you know where that fuse is located, it would save me a lot of time.
