Passenger Side Power Window Only Goes Down Sign In

1994
Toyota

My passenger side window has had some trouble for the past 6 months or so.

6 months ago I was no longer able to use the window control on the driver’s side to control the passenger side window.

A few months after that (sorry that I don’t have the actual date), I started having trouble getting the window up. Going down always worked, but going up would sometimes be a struggle.

Currently I’m unable to get the window up at all, it’s stuck in the down position. I was hoping to be able to open up the door panel and get to the motor to see if there was a bad or dirty connection somewhere that I could just clean up, but I’ve run in to an issue removing the door panel. The current problem is that there are 2 large plastic “screws” that just spin in place when I turn them with a driver. I’m scared to just try yanking these off because they are holding pretty tight. Does anyone have familiarity with this or removing door panels in general?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

You can forget "just cleaning it up". That's wishful thinking.

You are going to need a motor, regulator or switch. You're first step is to test for power and ground arriving at the motor in both directions.

Re: Passenger Side Power Window Only Goes Down Sign In

A few things happen in general with this type thing and you may have more than one thing wrong. Just know that if motor is drawing current if asked to go down more (it won't) with engine off, ignition on turn on dome light and see it dim slightly is telling it gets power for "down" request. Try up and it may not. Cheap trick to see if power is there.

One motor is just reversing polarity. If it can go one way it's wiring not the motor unless regulator is the problem binding the whole show up.

Controls on driver's side rules. That way if opposite requests at the same time happen the master control wins. It may not be working properly and if on door panel does get wet, exposed to more than if more protected. Wires go thru the door jam and are bending in the snorkel all the time and fray sometimes unseen even if you can get a peek with the boot hiding them in jam.

Short term to get it up, plain unplug the down window and carefully make up or jump wires one way then the other for up and down. Would like you to use fused jumper wire. Body of motor quite likely needs to be constant ground. If you can get it up leave it up and unplugged and continue any testing with a test light.

Start simple and if no luck take it from there. You may visually see a problem with panel off,

Thanks for the replies. I will try out the dome light test tonight. Does anyone have any ideas about those big flat plastic screws that I'm scared to pop off? I can't do much of anything until I get the door panel off, and I don't want to break these things.

Ryan - laugh, that's a hillbilly trick for a quick guess as to where to head next. No tools required just some info. Still do that when I have nothing with me at someone else's home or something,

Re: Passenger Side Power Window Only Goes Down Sign In

This sounds like you may just have a switch issue. If that's the case, you may not have to remove the panel....

If you can pop the switch out, get a test light & fused jumper. Check both wires of the switch in both up & down position. Power should switch between the 2 wires depending on which direction you are going. Probably the red/black wire won't have power on it.

Hold the switch in the up position & jump the terminal with a fused jumper hooked up to 12v, if the window goes up easy on it's own, you have a bad switch....

Discrete - here's a pic of the actual screw.

Sidom - thanks, I was able to get that cover off. I've never used a fused jumper, but google tells me that it's just a piece of wire hooked up 12v with a fuse between the wire and the hookup to the car. is this correct? also, when you say 12v - can i just use a 12v batter from around the house, like the kind found in smoke detectors?

Re: Passenger Side Power Window Only Goes Down Sign In

You are correct. It's basically just a piece of wire with a fuse in it, this way if you touch something you shouldn't, it will kill the power to minimize damage.
You need to use the vehicle power. If you have a long enough wire, you can use the battery or a spare cigarette lighter power adaptor would work.
You can use a regular fuse but that's a one shot deal. A circuit breaker fuse resets itself after it cools down when popped

That screw is just a plastic clip like the one DS posted. It may be hard to see but it's actually 2 pieces, If you hold it on the outer most part & unscrew it, it should come out unless the plastic threads are stripped....

I would check out the switch 1st tho before pulling the panel....

Re: Passenger Side Power Window Only Goes Down Sign In

Thanks everyone. I'll go grab a fused wire from autozone this evening, and try out the switch test. At the very least, it sounds like I'll have a good chance at getting the window up. Regarding that screw, though, it actually isn't two pieces on the face. I have looked very closely. There were a couple other two-piece clips that i removed, but this one is different. It must just be spinning, maybe I can try to secure the anchor behind the flap of upholstery and get it to remove. Anyway, I won't bother with that until I try out the switch test tonight.

The clip shown may not let go without wrecking it. Aftermarket new ones available.

Fused jumper wire. I don't see them but may have missed and made my own with a holder for spade fuse and two wires - one at each end to splice into wire with your choice, alligator clips or whatever works. With a motor out in pull your own junk yards I've been able to use household 9v batteries to test motors before I take one. Two in series might get the window up a tad and with help with two hands on glass finish going up so you buy some time for finding the real problem,

Re: Passenger Side Power Window Only Goes Down Sign In

I agree with Sid, before ripping the panel off check the switch. I get a lot of calls on this, and the majority is the switch (unless you are talking about Broncos and few other fords then its going to be a regulatorSmile). Also, as we techs are lazy we like to check the simplist/easiest things firstSly (most of the time). Work smarter not harder (or work easier lol).

Re: Passenger Side Power Window Only Goes Down Sign In

Hello again everyone, and thanks for your help. I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you with a status update, but we have (kinda) fixed the problem. The advice to not take off the door panel and first focus on the switch was great.

What I ended up doing was taking apart the switch and cleaning up some dirty connections. The interesting thing, though, is that while the passenger side switch does work (still somewhat intermittently), the driver’s side passenger window control (which hadn’t worked for over a year), now works perfectly. I guess this switch must run through the passenger side switch, but I’m still not completely clear on how this worked.

While the problem is fixed, I would love to understand what happened. If anybody has some more knowledge to pass on, it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Passenger Side Power Window Only Goes Down Sign In

Glad you had luck there. Hey - it's a 1994 and inside door gets all kinds of hot, cold, wet - just what connections like - not. A failure at master control could and does affect individual controls. Hope it will last for you. Thanks for posting the find,

T

Re: Passenger Side Power Window Only Goes Down Sign In

Good job on it getting it going Macgyver, fixed the switch with 2 sticks, a piece of tape & a hersey bar.....Wink Tongue
Looks like you just had some dirty contacts in the switch....

It sounds like you already understand how it works....

Basically any power window is just a simple 12v motor with 2 wires going to it. The switch just reverses polarity to motor to get it to go up or down. So the wires will have both power or ground at different times. When the RF switch is in the neutral position it just completes the circuit for the master switch so it can operate the window.
When the RF switch is used it breaks that contact. Reason being if it was being used for the down pos there would be 12v on wire #1 & ground on #2, if at the same time the master was used for the up pos then 12v would be applied to wire #2 & ground to #1.......That would create a short and would be a very bad thing....

Sounds like the contacts for the passenger switch are still a little dirty if you are getting intermittent operation.....Obviously a new switch would probably fix that....You can try cleaning up it some more & putting some di-electric grease on the contacts, that may buy you a little more time..

Thx for letting us know what you found out...
