I have a 1991 G20, and some time ago we had the alternator replaced. We don't drive the car that often or we would have noticed the ensuing problem in time to take it back to the repair shop. But ever since the repair job, there is no standby power (i.e., when parked) at all. Therefore, the radio always "forgets" any presets I might have saved, as well as the station last listened to. Instead, when the radio is turned on, it is always set to the AM band and tuned to the lowest frequency on the band (in my neck of the woods, that's airport terminal and traffic info). The front seats also have automated shoulder restraints that are supposed to open up when the door is opened and re-retract when the door is closed. But for this to happen now, the ignition key has to be turned all the way to the second position; in other words it works the same as the power for the windows.

Where would I begin to troubleshoot this? Ordinarily, I assume there's a standby power system that's supposed to stay on when the car is parked, subsisting on a trickle of juice from the main battery, and this system has now failed. This sounds like it ought to be a self-serviceable problem, provided I know what to look for. Fuses? Some loose wire or something, under the hood, somewhere? Or should I forget about it and take to a shop?

No, there is not such thing as a "standby system" power. The radio should have 2 power feeds, one keyed with the ignition to operate it and another one with constant power that is "keep alive" memory power. The seat belt system would have to be diagnosed separately.

All this is assuming that you didn't just have a dead battery when you got to the car.
