OBD II unable to read faults using scanner Sign In

OBD II - unable to read using scanner

I have a 97 dodge dakota (auto) that has OBD II capability. I've been using it occasionally for some time with no
problem. The other day I tried to have a look at a check engine code indication and the OBD II is not getting it's scan portion of the diagnostic through. I used it on another vehicle to confirm if the OBD was good (it was fine, no problem).

I'm wondering why the dakota will no longer read the scan? There is power to the OBD and it attempts to scan but then ceases and goes into an error reading. I've tried several times, shutting things off, same result. The pins on both the OBD and the vehicle connector have been cleaned and inspected to see if anything was bent. All looks good.

Would a fuse in the fuse box or the PCM possibly be causing a problem ? How would I check that out ?
I have power to the onboard obd connector but that's all it appears.

Steve; Same problems you were having last August. Same trouble code. Same problem with the scanner. Same problem with the Ford, as well. Bummer, dude. What brand scanner are you using? Try to pull codes generically if your scanner has that capability. We run into the same problem, every once in a while on Chrys. products. As Dave had mentioned back in Aug, the Windstar sounds like a mult-function switch problem; Did you check the contacts and connections as he had suggested?

Loren,

The Windstar problem has been repaired. I tried to delete that off of my posts but can't seem to get rid of it ?

Anyway the problem at hand is the OBD not working with my Dakota. It does work on other vehicles though, so NO problem with the scanner itself I don't think.

Any ideas on how to get the scanner talking to the onboard computer ?

I would check all fuses with a test light before pulling all your hair out. AlldataPro says there is a 10 amp fuse that feeds the connector, but it does not state which one.
