Nothing electrical works intermittently - Explorer 97 Sign In

Hello,
The car is 97 Ford Explorer, 8 cylinders, 160K miles. The car normally still runs great. When the problem below does not manifest itself, everything electrical works great also.

The recent problem has been that nothing electrical works once in a while. Then 15-30 min later everything works again.
By "nothing electrical works" I mean just that. There are zero sounds when trying to start the car, lights and radio do not work, key-less entry does not work. I keep trying for a few min and nothing electrical works; then I come back to the car half-hour later and everything works again. Electrical (so far) never shut down when the car was driving.

I don't think the problem is related to the engine/car being hot or cold. I also don't think it's related to rain. It just seems to happen randomly once in a while.

I would really appreciate if someone can suggest where I should start looking to fix the problem. Thank you.

Johnny; This 'smacks' of a bad battery or a poor connection, somewhere. Check all of the connections at the battery, starter, and ground. Even though the battery cables may 'look' okay, remove them and clean them internally. Be sure to clean the battery posts, as well. If you don't have a terminal cleaner, emery cloth works very well.

Agree again with Loren!

FYI they cheapened up the clamp ends of battery cables to non lead types. They may not be cleanable and still make a good connection. There are quality end splices available the work pretty good. Don't just use the $1 temporary ones for anything long term,

After checking the obvious possible's with the battery, and if the problem continues, I'd check the onboard computer.. Years ago I had a pontiac which would simply "shut down" at varying speeds. Drove me crazy. Checked by two dealers who were both bewildered. Finally, a factory rep sent the vin number to detroit and they responded with an addmission that some thirty cars had been detected with a faulty computer. Once replaced, the problem disappeared, but this took almost ten months of head scratching. Good luckBlush
