No start after I locked the car. Sign In

97 Nissan Maxima, 6cyl 3.0 engine, 266450 miles, automatic FWD
This doesn't happen all the time. This first happened last week, it did eventually start after tapping on the gas tank under the car, brought it to my mechanic. Check Engine light was on, (first time my check engine light came on since I've owned it) the codes (4 of them) seem to imply the fuel pump went. That was replaced. The codes were cleared, and the next day it happened again, I did eventually did get it started, again brought it back with the check engine light on again, same codes. They started to play with the remote and noticed that if I hit the "unlock" button again, when I have that trouble, it starts right up. I went on my way. Again the next day it happened again, again I got it going and brought it down again with the same check engine codes, they said that there is a secondary alarm (after-market) in there and that may be causing the problem. They told me to go next door to a alarm company that works on cars, and they would be best for that. I did and when they finished, they told me that there was also a "old" remote starter in there, looks like from the first owner. he said that this also could cause the problem, now why they didn't also remove that when they knew I was having start issues after the car was locked, I have no idea.
The car seemed fine after that until today, again the same problem. It wasn't starting after pushing the unlock button over and over, shutting doors, trunk everything. The mechanic did say to me if it happens again, try disconnecting one of the battery cables and reconnecting. That work today. Now every time I did get the car going the would run fine until I got to the garage, this time it conked out on my while I was driving, and of course the check engine light is now on. As a note I have traveled more than 100 miles since it was cleared last time, both times prior it was over 100 miles when the check engine light went on, and only after I have trouble starting does the light come on. One of the codes I believe was a knock sensor, but the mechanics don't think that has anything to do with my problems starting after it has been locked, and only after it was locked, if I leave it unlocked it starts right up every time. Could the old remote starter be causing this, and did I really need a new fuel pump?

What are the exact code numbers being set?

Not sure, the only one he mentioned was a knock sensor code, but all 4 seem to be related but the question are they related to the fact that i tried to start the car and because of the Old security/remote starter problem, it wasn't going to start anyway.
The car had been running great 30mpg (at least until I had to start using the AC about a month ago, then it dropped to about 28mpg. No bucking. just smooth running. i will be bringing it back tomorrow I can get the code numbers then if you think that will help

Every code number has an exact, specific meaning. Obviously, the other shop's interpretation turned out to be wrong. We need those numbers, not their interpretation to have any idea where to go from here.

Only 3 of them, PO340, PO 325, PO 600. What do you think

I have no idea how he got fuel pump from those codes. The PO600 is a transmission code and may be unrelated to the engine problem. The PO325 is a knock sensor code that Nissans are really notorious for. The PO340 is a Cam Sensor code and likely the source of your problem. This could be a bad sensor but could just as easily be a wiring or PCM problem. It could even be a mechanical issue with Camshaft movement.

They are removing the remote starter now and if that doesn't fix it I guess I need to look at the Cam, any idea how much that fix might be

It should be about an hour's labor to get it diagnosed properly.

Turned out to be the Cam sensor thanks for the help. Still feel bad about spending $300 on a fuel pump that maybe I didn't need.

I would bet you didn't need it. There wasn't even a reason to suspect it. Beware of that shop in the future.

Hate to do that, they are new,I was there very first customer, and they have been pretty good to me. This was the.first time they screwed up, and they only charged me $25 to install the cam sensor, plus if I need time to pay a bill, they help out and no interest either. At least it's fixed now, next will be a power steering leak. It's always something, but I still get 30mpg (no AC running) on a car with 267000 miles, so hate getting rid of it and enjoy mo car payments.
