No power when shut off Sign In

2004 Chevy Impala. Came out to my car this morning and had absolutely no power - nothing on the dash and car would not start. Would not start with a jump. I put car in drive and power came on to the dash - so I put back into part and started. I let idle for 15 minutes, then shut it off and lost all power again. I put back into drive, then to park, then started fine then droive around. After 10 minutes it lost all power and stalled. I put back into drive then to park, started, drove for 10 minutes, let idle for 15 minutes, then shut off - lost all power again. This evening, car again had no power but started without having to do the drive/park sequence. Battery is new (March) and shows about 14.5V when car is off and about 16V when running - so I think battery and alternator are ok. What's going on?

You will need to check for a crank signal at the starter S terminal with a testlight. Connect the alligator clip to Battery - terminal and touch the probe to the S terminal of starter solenoid. Have a helper crank the engine. If the test light glows bright, the problem is the starter motor. If the test light does not glow, you will have to back track the wire to see if voltage is passing through the range selector swithch. Check this first and then post back with the results if we need to go further.
