Nissan Pick Up, Battery not charging Sign In

My son has a 1996 Nissan Pick Up. He replaced the altenator and battery, But the battery goes low while driving. He disconnected the battery while running and the altenator kept engine running. He removed all the fuses except the ones needed to run engine and checked charge. Before starting 12.5 VDC, while idling 11.4 VDC, But when he accelerates voltage dropped as low as 9.5 VDC. I cant think of anything other than the altenator that would cause this. Any other ideas greatly appreciated.

Why on Earth would you remove all the fuses to check the charging system?

Simply take a voltage reading across the battery with all accessories off at idle.

If you show only battery voltage or less. then shut it off and test for power at the main terminal of the alternator with the key OFF.

Post back with the results.

The altenator plug reads the same as the battery both at 12.3VDC. We removed the fuses to eliminate any possible shorts draining the battery, an isolation process.

That's not how you test a charging system. Put them all back in and test it again.

Why would the car stay running, with the battery disconnected, if the altenator is not working, and if it is working why is it not charging the battery?

That's the best way i know to smoke your electronics. Don't do that. Just read the voltage as I asked.

The readings were the same. But I think the problem is in the voltage regulator, not putting out enough voltage to keep up. Same problem we had with the last one. Both new from Auto Zone. Taking it back tomorrow.

>>That's the best way i know to smoke your electronics<< Couldn't have said it better, myself. Taking the battery cable off with the engine running can damage diodes in the alternator. Check all fuses. Some of the imports had fused circuits for the charging system. There is a fusable link and two fuses, #9 & #10. Check for 12V power to the large terminal on the alternator.

Not only can you mess up the alternator by do that, but you can cause a power surge that can take out any module in the car in a heartbeat.
