My 1996 Jeep Cherokee County won't start.

I drove home, parked, no problems. I went to start the following morning and it would not start.
Recent work by my puzzled mechanic: Replaced spark plugs, wires ok, replaced distributor cap and rotor, replaced coil, replaced crankshaft position sensor. Oil change. Checked relays. Recharged battery. Battery does not fit properly but has not presented a problem before. Checked fault code. Located 12, 54. Where is 56? It is not found in the Chiltons.
Discovered the camshaft was wet. Dried it.
Previous work: replaced fuel pump, water pump, transmission tune up and filter.
