Mazda 626 LX accessories always on even when turned off and key removed. Sign In

Hello everyone. I'm looking at buying a 1988 Mazda 626 LX for my 16 year old son. (His first car, and with his own money). The owner told me that when he turns the engine off, and removes the key, the thing like stays on "accessories". It's like leaving the key turned halfway on to the "accessories" position even when the engine is off and the key is out. He said he has to disconnect the battery when he's not driving it or it will go dead. I wish I could provide more detail, but the car is not mine, so all I know is what I've described here and what he told me.

I'm thinking something as simple as a new ignition switch, but I wanted someone else's expert opinion before I even consider buying the car. I've been a mechanic (in a former life) and I usually repair my own cars, but I don't want to buy it and find out it is something much more diabolical and/or beyond my ability to repair!

Thanks for any input.

Don

Guess: If you can't jiggle the key and get it to behave it could be involved. Get a professional diagnosis first and pass on the car if too involved,
