Low voltage issue

Ignition problem on a 1970's Mercruiser 888 (Ford 302). Cranks, but does not start. I have 12 volts coming out of the solenoid when the key is on, but when I connect the wires to the ignition coil, my reading reduces to 4.5 volts. Do I have a faulty coil? I have an old spare and it does the same thing. Should it remain 12 volts?

You need to start out with what's called a voltage drop test. Get a digital voltmeter and connect red lead to positive battery cable and black lead to positive coil terminal and crank the engine. If you get more than 1 volt reading on the meter, then you are losing voltage between those 2 points. You can then try taking your readings at closer points to narrow down where the problem may be. Remember, if your using points, the key on voltage will be reduced down to 9 volts intentionally. It should be a full 12 in "start" position. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
