1992 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0, 125k miles. Jeep has been sitting for about 5years. Don't remember if had this problem then. Started with 2 new headlights. All exterior lights work except, low beams, high beams work as long as high/low switch held in hi position, blue indicator light also comes on, but as soon as release high/low switch highs go out along with blue indicator light. I don't remember if jeep has a delay relay, and cannot tell from wiring diagram. If it does I am not sure what this type of relay looks like or it's location or if this could cause my issue. I hope that's enough info if anyone has any ideas. Thanks, Rob

So you cannot get it to click into the high beam position and stay there? That would be a bad switch.

Is the switch inside the steering colume, or replace the turn signal. I guess the turn signal part actually controls a few things. But I guess it sounds like your saying replace that part? Thanks for the input. Oh what about the light control switch? All the other lights come on, tail parking etc, so that switch is probably fine right?

Been a while since I did one of those. You don't need to pull off the wheel, but the lower trim panel needs to come out so you can lower the column down and get at it. There will be a metal rod going down the column to it and its held on with two bolts. Pretty easy job with simple hand tools. In 96 they integrated it into a multifunction switch and on those you do have to remove the steering wheel.

It's mounted on the top of the steering column so you may have to lower it a little. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Ok thanks cause I was going to look where turn signal enters column. And so the column can be lowered some. Don't think I have had to do that before. So good I am learning some new stuff

I actually have a Haynes manual from back when I owned one. It doesn't show you that switch but does show how to lower the column. After you take off the lower trim panel there are 4 nuts to remove. They hold the column up. Then its simple to see and replace that switch. A good job for a DIY guy looking to learn a thing or two, as its simple and not a lot of tools involved. If your Haynes was printed around the time mine was, go to page 12-6 and look at figure 10.9 to see what is holding up the column. Always good to learn new things and it feels good to save some money doing it. Just remember not to go too overboard. Some things can be over the head of anyone that doesn't have some very pricey tools and a lot of know-how, and to attempt them without either will make a repair very expensive, easily double or triple what it would've been to let the pros handle it. You can always ask us for ideas, and we can guide you in the right path, but everyone has a limit and its good to remember your own in future projects. We see guys all the time at our jobs that get in way over their head and we mop up the mess. I don't think for a minute this is you, especially on this job. Let us know if you have any further questions and if this part fixed your issue.

Ok I missed an important diagnostic part. So I swapped out the part. Thought it worked but here's the best part, the part I missed, with the key off, light switch off, I can hit the high beam switch high beams come on and stay on switch to low and lows work, for about 20 seconds, now in that time if I turn ignition on or turn lights on with pullout switch lights go out and back to original symptoms meaning you can hold hi beams on and that's it. Now if I try and repeat this process too soon it won't work. Seems like some how the timer delay is interfering. Seems like its behaving backwards. Should have warned you I get some weird problems! I really don't know what the delay part looks like but must have one. By the way I did try old switch and it behaves same just didn't notice it before. Any ideas??

One other thing that I missed and seems weird. But when I pull light switch, The round knob in the panel, it seems like it only comes out one click instead of two. 1st for parking lights then there should be another click right for head lights? Could that be the whole issue. But then why would they work if switch is not even pulled out as I described before for that 20 or so sec, also I here a click like a timer when they go out. Oh well time to give it a rest!

Oh my you can disregard the previous 2 emails! It is the switch, or the light control whatever it's called. I messed around with it and there seems something internal with it that broken, but it now pulls out 2 clicks and when I wiggle it lights work all normal!! So I will have to replace that but access looks difficult. I guess from behind but looks hard to get too and not today. Boy that was stupid of me to not notice that right away! Sorry wasted your time!!

You're not wasting my time. Its part of the learning process. The switch isn't hard to do either. This will help Removal & Installation See Figures 1 and 2 Fig. Fig. 1: View of the headlight switch This procedure applies only to models equipped with an instrument panel-mounted headlight switch. - Disconnect the battery ground cable.
- Pull the switch to the full ON position.
- Reach up under the panel and depress the switch shaft retainer button while pulling the switch control shaft straight out.
- Remove the switch ferrule nut from the switch.
- Disconnect the switch from the harness.
- Installation is the reverse of removal.
