This is a (1996 BMW Z3 1.9 4cyl) with the loss of the headlights, dashlights, and blinkers while driving they started going dim. Wife was headed home on a 25 mile drive, the lights started going dim and got worse as she got closer to the home. Car never stalled she said but got worse. She restarted the car when arrived home but still no lights not quite sure of problem but feel maybe its the altenator, I'm out of town till next weekend and live on the Island of Maui, so if I need parts would like to try and purchase on the mainland to take back with me.

Not familure with BMW's, however, sounds very much like ALT. one simple test I used to do would be to simply pull positive cable off battery and see if car will keep running. But with todays electrical auto computer cars not sure if that is still a valid test. some automotive repair places will test ALT in car or a parts supply house, but all my local parts supply want the ALT out for testing. and its free test.
you can always pick one up, NOT install it, pull the old one out and have it tested befor putting the new one in, as pretty sure you cant take it back if its been installed at least around here.
Also if you have a book and voltage meter you can check it that way.
could also be a fuseable link? do all other elect. componets work? Kinda doubtful though as I would think a fuseable link would just go out like a regular fuse.
from what you state though Id agree and say the ALT is the coulpret.
