Light sensor on 2000 GMC pickup. Sign In

The problem is the light sensor on the dash of my 2000 GMC 1500 Pickup, The lights ( headlights) stay on even during the day. This system uses the light detector to turn the headlights off during the day. Running lights work fine, also if the park brake is used the lights remain off. I beleive the sensor is bad, to change it I must remove the complete dash all the way to the winshield. I have reviewed a diagram that states the sensor goes to the body module. What I would like to know is, can I find a relay or something without dismantling the whole dash first. Is there a module somewhere in the lower dash to check with a meter to see if the sensor is really bad or something in the body module. If I can find out that the sensor is the problem, well I can live with removing the whole dash.

You could put an ohmmeter across the terminals for the ambient light sensor at the BCM. The BCM is found under the left side of the dash and the sensor’s terminals are A4 (white wire) & C3 (gray wire). With the ohmmeter connected, cover the sensor too block any light from getting to the sensor. Wait a few minutes remove the cover and place a trouble light above the sensor; you should see a swing in the ohmmeter readings.
Sorry I don’t have what the readings should be but you could compare your reading to a “known good” sensor. I can’t see the parts department having an issue with you testing a new sensor while standing at their counter?
