Jump Started with cables round the wrong way Sign In

Hi all,
I have a Mark 2 Golf and tonight in the dark and pouring rain I tried to jump start the car but had the leads crosssed over and they started smoking.
I tried again with some new cables but now it will crank but not start Unsure the dash still lights up and the clock works... I don't really have any tools but is there anything I can check/do to find out what the problem is?

Any help would be most appreciated
Craig

This is called reverse polarity jump start. This can be VERY VERY dangerous for you. there are 3 things you need to check.

1. battery - It may have been cooked
2. Main 100A Fuse - There is a main fuse that your car runs off, hopefully itr would of cause the jolt and blown. its located in your box under the hood.
3. ECU (THIS IS BAD) - If the others seem to be fine, you will need to take it to a mechanic and get your ECU looked at. If the fuse did not catch the jolt, this may be cooked. But if you have power to ither things, it should be ok. Let us know.

Thanks for the replies. Yes it will turn over - just not fire up.

I'll let you know how I get on checking the fuses over the weekend. It's old enough that it doesn't have an ECU...
