Jeep ignition problem????????????? Sign In

Hi, I had a 1996 Jeep Gr cherokee laredo stolen from me, I fortunately got it back, anyway I changed out both door locks, ignition switch and ignition cylinder. Here's the problem, when I turn the key to the off position the interior lights come on and will not go off, either when the key is in or out, here's the kicker, if I turn the key back to acc the lights go off, but I obviously can't remove the key in that position. Last week I was playing with the key while the lights were on and they magically went off, I removed the key and was a happy man, until today, it started doing it again, I thought maybe the ignition switch was bad so I swapped it out with a new one to no avail. Tommorrow I'm going to try a new lock cylinder. I really need some help here, I have to disconnect the battery every night so the lights don't kill it over night. Any help would be greatly appreciated big time, oh I checked all the fuses and relays I could think of. BIG THANKS TO ANYONE THAT CAN HELP.

This is crazy but we still try here. Any chance a door jam switch is at fault and that just a wild guess, T and my Cat!

Tom, Thanks for the reply, we think they are all ok because in the jeep there is a screen that lets you know when each and every door is open and they are all working properly. The lock cylinder did'nt work, tommorow we're going to try the headlight/dimmer switch and see how that goes, I'll let you know. Thanks again, Wally

Is the ignition switch adjusted properly? I would try pulling the switch leaving the electrical connector plugged in and operating it manually making sure you get accessory voltage in that position. When you say turning the key to ACC everything goes off, then the switch isn't properly orientated. You may have to replace the actuating linkage between the tumbler and ign. switch. Just a thought.

Steve, Thanks for the reply, the ignition switch and the ignition cylinder are basically direct bolt ins, they can only go in one way, we tried a brand new in the box lock cylinder the other day and the same result, we did'nt get the headlight/dimmer switch yet, we get it monday, I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the input. Wally
