2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser
4.2 liter turbo
95k miles

Ok so the lights began to dim while driving. Then the speedometer wouldn't go above 20 mph no matter the real speed. Then great difficulty starting, 3 or more tries while the engine agonized then finally turned over. This over a period of three months or so. Finally no start at all. Had battery checked at local parts store. It was indeed very old and gone bad.Replaced it and zoom car starts and everyone happy. One week later same issues and again finally will not start. Now everyone (kid next door who's a decent shade tree mechanic) says alternator. Lights and radio etc. work even though car won't turn over. I've thought of jumping it and if it runs, head over to auto parts place that will do alternator check for free (they advertise). Running low on AAA calls so I don't want to waste one if the thing dies during this trip. Any advice?

Somebody needs to test the battery and charging system before going any further.
