Infiniti J30t Driver side door wont open at all Sign In

1993 J30t Infiniti
167k miles
v6 3.0L

I've tried everything, remote, key, even brute force but nothing will get the driver side door open.

It all started when I was driving after work and i got out of the car and the door would not close, it simply bounced off the frame - not like it was already locked - but closing all the way and just not setting into place as usual. I started mashing buttons on the remote and jimmying the key to get it close and it finally did.

Since that moment the driver side door no longer opens at all no matter what combination of key and remote i use. The lock lever itself tends to spasm or jump back into the locked position when I try to open it, or only moves half way to the fully unlocked point which makes me think it might be electrical, also because this whole mess started when it was raining.

This is my first post so I'd welcome any help, I'm broke as hell and would appreciate a cheap solution or else I'll just be jumping across from the passenger side until then.

May I suggest leaving the GD remote alone for a bit! Open door holding manually to unlock while pulling inside lever. Lube receiving jaws with light spray - WD-40 or equivalent. May need to get inside and lube up or replace the latch if never lubed over all these years. It should be sprung to hold jaws open and if bumped it will shut with door open and just bounce off the car. Hold jaws open while handle in open request and free it up,

I've tried opening the door as you suggested and it still wont open at all.

Or maybe i'm not understanding exactly "Open door holding manually to unlock while pulling inside lever"

If I do get it open I'll be sure to lube the clamps as you said.

OK: If latch is real sticky or pressure from being closed is disallowing them to open, try pulling door more towards shut from inside or better with helper push from outside relieving pressure on the locking latch. If real dry of grease/lube it may not spring to open with resistance.

Lubing latches is a neglected practice for ages now. When I started out it was considered routine to do all latches, hinges at every oil change but that went out the window in the rush of things.

When new they were lubed with long lasting lube which can't last the life of a car.

It could be plain broken but most are just lacking lube. Many of the complaint when door just bounces back when closing it was touched by a curious child or bumped somehow if nothing else was wrong.

Whenever inside a door I lube stuff as that's the best opportunity for the inside stuff. WD-40 can free up and lube, and a followup of spray lithium grease lasts longer. Watch what you are spraying not to gunk up glass or get real greases on rubber stuff.

I doubt this car but some cars with power locks if the actuator/motor freezes/corrodes in place they will or can be stuck there!

Surprisingly, water, salty road water can get to inside of many door designs where there's a lot of stuff that doesn't like that and you don't' see that of course from outside or with door intact.

Another thing with time and use is door hinges can wear causing forces down on latch from the weight of the door such that lifting up (some handles will bust - nice) to relieve the force preventing proper action.

Keep trying. Hope nothing is broken as silly little parts can be tough to find. They love to sell whole assemblies. I'm a chronic junkyarder grabbing cans full of the little clips and things that break in assorted vehicles.

More: Slim Jims for opening doors frequently causes more harm to electrical and even rods get bent. Arggh. If ever needed use a passenger's door as there's usually a lot of stuff in a driver's door to mess up. There also a balloon way to slightly bend/torque doors to get at locked out issues - no the case here but think of getting help if you lock yourself out with someone or place with correct tools to get in with no or minimal damage.

Silly things can wreck a whole weekend to fixMad

Just want to thank you for the information. Pushing on and pulling the door in the method you described doesn't seem to do be doing it either.

I need a way to open the door so I can lube the clamps as you mentioned and stop this from happening again

If all your attempts fail try a body repair shop for help. Around me they tend to have more gadgets and tools that can likely get in with minimal if any damage as they deal with dented stuck doors all the time.

You should be able to test its action before closing it again (or the shop) so you aren't back there again right away. If it needs parts or something get the panel off before trying again as it would be tons easier to deal with, with it off and stuck shut with it on.

Good luck,
