Impala - rear window defroster Sign In

2001 Chevrolet Impala 3400 V6, Mileage = 176000; My rear window electric defroster does not work. When I turn it on, I hear a clicking or chatter sound. If anyone has an idea, please let me know what to look for and where. Thanks

RWD relay could be making the noise and the problem? Couldn't find location but found a pic of it. Owner's manual may help with location or another here. Listen for it if needed to find it.

Looks like this...........

Duralast / Relay - Rear Window Defog Part Number:
19307 Can't say if the cause or result of the issue but on my likely list, T

Re: Impala - rear window defroster Sign In

Hi Tom, I located the Rear window defogger relay in the fuse box located on the right side of the dash and replaced it. However, the chattering or clicking sound still persists. I am just wondering if I have a short. Any suggestions?

Can you put you hand/finger on that relay and feel that it's the one making the noise?

Yes, it happens with both the new relay and the old one.

Re: Impala - rear window defroster Sign In

Shoot. So much for wishful thinking and an easy fix. Save that relay as it may be identical to another for testing or use someday.

Like most this no doubt sends RWD request to timer device as they do shut off by themselves or if you shut the car off it would be off until requested again. In a career I've never seen one of those go wrong but that's just chance.

That, or the RWD is drawing too much current somehow?? a pinched wire or something a bit odd. Most have power and ground connections right at each side of rear glass and bet they are well hidden.

Don't know why but I'd be disconnecting it at either one and see if problem persists and you know the defrost won't work that way. BE WARNED, THE DEFROSTER IS LIKE A DECAL ON THE GLASS AND CAN EASILY BE BROKEN - CAREFUL WITH THE GRIDS AND THE CONNECTIONS.

I think this will take looking for a short either in dash end or along the way if wire is chaffing somewhere or if some recent aftermarket item was added look there for faulty work or tapping wrong wiring??

May take some help to get to what will be some simple thing,

T
