Ignition Problem with 02 Impala Sign In

Recently I have been having a problem with my 02 Chevy Impala, and I suspect the ignition cylinder is to blame. When I try to turn the key in the ignition, it won't budge an inch. The engine won't turn on or even the battery. For the past year I've had problems with getting the key to turn over, but I've always managed to get it do so after trying a few times, that is until now. I've tried getting another key made from the VIN number, as well as lubricating the key itself with oil, and jiggling the steering wheel back and forth, but nothing has worked. It seems like the ignition cylinder is a problem part for these cars, and I'm hoping I won't have to spend several hundred dollars to get it fixed. Any help or insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated.

First off, you should never put oil in a lock cylinder. It only causes more problems. Locks are lubricated using powdered graphite. Too late for yours now. It sounds like you already realize that the lock needs to be replaced so I'm not sure what you're asking for.

They will also have to do a relearn for the security system after replacing the lock.

I was simply looking for any thoughts or opinions as to something else it could be or things I could try from those who know more than I about these things, just like everyone else who posts on here.

Better replace the lock cylinder while you still have a chance of turning it. Once it jams up it is a PITA to get it separated from the ignition switch. You can also have a lock smith code the new cylinder, so you don't need two different keys.

To maybe get that last needed turn of the key.

Insert the key as normal, pinch the key with two fingers and lightly twist the key in the direction toward the start position.
While doing this take a screwdriver and hit the end of the key with the driver's handle. I don't mean beat the crap out of the key; but repeated taps, may get it to turn.
If by chance it does turn for you, DON"T turn it back to the lock position; it'll likely get stuck again.
The key has to be in the accessory position to dismantle the assembly; with out having to smash it apart.
