High voltmeter reading Sign In

1998 Jeep Cherokee-Classic, 4.0L, 149,000

Driving on the freeway last evening my check gauges signal came on after about one mile(at freeway speeds). I saw that the voltmeter read 19(or max. reading). I immediately exited and after about a minute idling at a traffic light it returned to normal(12). After another 5 minutes while returning home it shot back up to 19 for about five minutes and then dropped to normal just as I arrived home.
I immediately noticed my automatic locks were dead on the doors and car struggled badly to turn over. I left the car overnight and this morning found the automatic locks functioning again and turned over as it usually does.

Re: High voltmeter reading Sign In

Sounds like the voltage regulator is trying to hang up. When the voltage spikes high, the regulator is hung in the on position. When you drove home, the hard starting was due to the battery being overcharged and overheated. After sitting over night, it cooled down enough to operate properly. I would replace the alternator as I think the regulator is built inside the alternator.
