I have a 1994 Ford Ranger supercab 4x4 with a 3.0 v6 engine. When you try to start it with the key it just spins 99% of the time and will not start. How ever if you roll it off and pop the clutch or spray starter fluid in it it will start right up and run like a dream. Fuel pressure has been checked and is fine. I have changed the fuel pressure regulator also and did not fix the problem. I took it to a mechanic and the only thing I was told was that his computer said there was low voltage going to the eec relay. This truck is driving me crazy please help.

I have plenty of fire from the battery as I have had a charger hooked to it while trying to start. I also changed out the computer as I found a burnt resister on the board. It had an alarm system at one time and the mechanic told me that it may have the fire cut off for the injecters somehow so i removed the alarm and all it's componets will still no answer to the problem. I also replaced the key switch and the switch at the bottom of the steering column in thought that a bad connection in one or the other could have been the problem.

Question first: Describe "Spins" if you would? If starter just spins but doesn't turn engine that's a starter drive issue most likely. If it "cranks" engine normally and not starting test for lack of fuel or spark while cranking as you said it could work if not started by starter,

When it spins it is turning the engine. At one point in time it would start periodically with the key.

OK: For the moment I'm lost in thought on this as it's a bit different. Most all provide for spark and fuel to be in a "grace" mode while cranking vs running. In that starter fluid seems to always work perhaps battery voltage while cranking is dropping too far for proper fuel pressure.

Check voltage drop when starter is working. Just sitting there should read 12.6 or so depending on how long since last running if fully charged and good. If it drops below 10v it could be an issue.

If it will aways behave with a jump from known good source it's a maybe that battery isn't getting quite enough thru or not up to par with cranking amps but close,

I think Tom is on the right track here. Usually when you get symptoms like this it's due to the fact that the starter is robbing too much current from the ignition system. This could also come down to an ignition system that doesn't have enough reserve to handle the extra load.

No it only starts when you spray it or push it off. Thanks

The spray is tons more volitile and when push starting you arnen't taxing the battery so much was what I was thinking. I'm only tossing out ideas and Hammer thinks it's possible too. I know some Mopars that want exact current available or all hell breaks lose. It could, repeat could be similar. Check voltage drops while cranking,
