My neighbor was putting a new battery in his Camry , when he hooks it up the horn starts going crazy. Obviously the kill switch on his alarm is stopping the car from starting. He does NOT have a remote, he said its built in to his key . The switch to lock/unlock the doors DOES work He has the red switch on the left side of his steering wheel that is blinking.. I googled to ask what I should do, some said he has to reset the toggle switch . which I assume is the red button beside the steering wheel. As I said, It is blinking . Some said to hold the switch in while hooking the battery up .One person said 10secs, another said 10 minutes! Another person said he needs a FOB key that you purchase from a dealership. Another said "if u know someone at repair shop that has Alldata, they can print out good directions to tell you what to do. "turn key to start for 10min, disconnect alarm under the dash. Said the battery to the starter direct will turn the engine over fine but ignition system still runs through the alarm system" HUH? etc etc. So is there anyone who TRULY knows what he can do to reset the alarm so his poor car will start for him? Hes a very old man, late 80"s and I really want to help him. He doesnt have alot of money to have this towed to a dealership or shop. So Im praying there could be a simple answer to get his car starting for him. He does NOT have the manual that came with the car. I'm going to go print that out now I guess. In the meantime, help help! ! Thanku in advance to whoever can help me! (us! ) :)Unsure

This sounds like an aftermarket alarm.....

On some AM alarms you need the remote to reset the alarm......If there is no remote for the alarm, one field trick that works on some am alarms is to disconnect the negative battery cable, turn the key to the on position & then hook the negative battery cable back up.....

It's usually best to have all systems off when hooking up a battery so this is obviously, try at your own risk but it has worked for me hundreds of times in the shop on cars with no remotes that needed to be started with no problems....

The 10 minute procedure you are talking about is to reset a factory GM system......This doesn't work on aftermarket alarm systems

Like Sid stated, if this is indeed the factory alarm system, disconnect the battery and insert the key into the ignition lock cylinder. Then reconnect the battery.

THEFT DETERRENT OPERATION
When the system is set to the theft deterrent mode and any of the following conditions are met, the system sounds the horns and flashes the headlights and the taillights for approx. 1 minute. At the same time the system locks all doors (If all door are not locked at once, the system repeats door locking operation every 0.55 seconds during the 1 minute alarm time).

Condition
1. Any of the doors (Including the engine hood and luggage compartment door) is unlocked or opened without the key. *1
2. The battery terminal is disconnected and reconnected. *2
3. The system receives panic signal from remote key less entry. *3
*1: Only active arming mode.
*2: When the ignition key is not inserted in the key cylinder.

If it is an aftermarket alarm system, you'll need the remote or you'll have to remove it from the vehicle.
