Headlights not working right

I have a 1999 Ford Taurus ( 3.0) with 168,000 miles with headlight problems. I wanted to change the bulb because you could just barely see it when it was on and when I put a new one in it doesn"t come on at all.

?? Was one just dim before and quit when replaced? Check that socket and wires real good and check that ground is strong there too,
