Headlights go off eventually come back on 98 chevy 4x4 crew cab 3500 Sign In

I have a 1998 chevy 4x4 3500 crew cab 350 cid vortex. My problem is that the headlights will go off stay off for awhile then come back on. Scary at 60mph this has happend more than once. Every thing else stays on dash lights, parking lights, tail lights, turn signals. clearance lights etc all stay on. I'm thinking it could be a relay heating up but where to look is the problem any suggestions

Probably an overheating connector somewhere. Check the headlamp switch

Are you referring to the off and on switch? If not where is the headlamp switch located?

Really?..........................

If i have to explain what a headlamp switch is, your chances of fixing this are slim to none.

You're going to have to start wigging wires and plugs with the lights on to see if you can trigger something, most likely at the headlamp switch or the dimmer switch.

I'm 68 yrs old and have worked on cars since I was 15 and in all that time I have never heard a headlight switch called a headlamp switch just a differance in terminology. I thought perhaps you were talking about something in the curcuit other than the off and on switch. At any rate thank you for your input I will check it out.

It all means the same as you stated. Maybe the headlamp terminology is used more often today because head lights are composite with replaceable lamps(bulbs) instead of the old sealed beam types of the earlier years.
