HELP! Electical system (VW Golf GTi MK2 (1988) Sign In

Help anyone!

My car is a VW Golf GTi Mk2 (Late 1988, Left-hand drive). (I'm in Madrid, Spain)

The first problem was that the reversing lights didn't work - Every time I put the gear/transmission into reverse the fuse just blows.

After replacing the blown fuse - suddenly there was a 'whining' noise and white smoke started to come out from under the hood. I switched off the engine and had a look: the reversing light switch (connected/situated in the gearbox/transmission) had melted/blown - along with the red/black (positive??) wire.

Now, the car just won't start. (the engine turns but won't 'fire') The battery is fine - the central locking system and electric windows still operate BUT the when I insert the key and turn - no lights turn on -the lights don't work.

Where should I start looking????

I hope someone can give me some advice/clues/help etc... (The local garage charges over US$100 per hour and I just can't even afford 30 minutes!)

Many thanks, Chris AKA goldfinga

hi:
you have to look under the fuse box i think some short happen between the fuses connectors, repair it first and use only the Original fuses.

hi skyluck, thanx 4 the reply...

Well the reverse-light switch at the gearbox/transmission definitely needs replacing, and also one of the wires that goes from there to the main fuse box (that's gonna be a fun task!)

The main fuse box will probably need replacing too, unless it's safe to just solder any loose connections (???)

As for the parts/replacements and fuses... there's actually no shortage of getting them here - especially from a scrap/breakers yard (there happens to be huge one near where I live - I bought a practically brand-new rear bumper for around US$20, and new indicator lights for $5)

Main problem is time! hopefully will have some this week!
