Ford Focus Battery warning light on Sign In

Hi,

I have a 2003 Ford Focus. Last week I noticed the battery light would come on intermittantly. There was corrosion around the battery terminals. I cleaned this off with a wire brush (both the posts and the inside of the connectors) and some coke. I got the connections nice and shiny; the connection wasn't as tight as it used to be after I cleaned off the corrosion so I used some alluminum foil over the terminal posts to get the connection tight. This did seem to help but the battery light is back to coming on intermittantly again. The car starts strong. I have noticed that there is a change in the engine sound when the light comes on. Does this mean the alternator is not running at certain times perhaps? That's actually my worry. I don't want to replace the alternator. Is it possible the wires are also corroded at place other than the batterry? Thanks for your help,

Rod

First thing, tin foil is not the way to tighten a battery terminal. Get a new terminal end. Second, having a battery light on does not mean you have a battery problem. It means there is a problem with the charging system.

Agreed if the cables are loose and can't be tightend any more either your posts are damaged/too thin or clamps damaged. Don't use tinfoil this will more hten likely cause voltage drop due to bad connection. Also they are very common for the connectors at the alternator. Next time the light comes on wiggle the connector while watching a voltmeter if it the voltage jumps 12~15v while wiggling the wire that is your problem. This is easy to check on SPI engines DOHC engines can be a little tricky.
