Foglights - DRL Sign In

How can I make my foglights operate independently of headlights so they can be used as DRL?

Re: Foglights - DRL Sign In

Have to ask as I don't know - Do these come on now with high or low beam request? Are they totally a separate bulb from headlights?

If mine and not knowing exact set up now I'd wire in a couple nice LED amber DRL that come on when ignition is on thru a fused spare marked as such most cars have. LED cost up front but are now pretty bright and amber to me means they aren't confused with regular headlights.

You would have to have a good spot to mount them and try to pick a place that you wont just smash them on parking bumpers or curbs.

A great reason for LEDs is they don't use diddle for electricity. We don't think about it but the cost of running lights just makes alternator work harder and it's not a separate bill but you are paying for it!

Re: Foglights - DRL Sign In

Thanks, TOm...fogs are separate and linked to low beam headlights. My plan is to wire them independently with a separate relay. Apparently there is a way to make a one wire cut and direct 12v connect under the dash to accomplish this but not having a full wiring diagram makes this a scary proposition.

If you really want DRL why not just turn on your headlights during the day?

That's what i have been doing. I did a Xenon conversion on this vehicle and running the headlights may well have led to shortened bulb life which is expensive.

Re: Foglights - DRL Sign In

OK: If you insist on messing with OE set up you'll find out what expensive it sooner or later. Check fuse panel for an empty spot indicating ign (for ignition) meaning that spot only has power with ignition on.

Then run instantly thru a fuse a power wire to the fog light's power wire which you would cut - seal off the unused end and secure out of harm's way. Run automotive grade wire carefully thought out and secured away from all moving or hot items to the power wire of the fog lights which would then always be on with ignition on.

I wouldn't do it but it's your car. If I really wanted DRLs I would add LED lights as mentioned which last near forever and use no power really but do cost up front. Risk is them getting broken by a stone or hitting something which is a risk to lights/lenses anyway. Your call,

Re: Foglights - DRL Sign In

Tom, I think the real issue here is he's trying to make the factory DRLs not come on and that's not going to happen nor would it be legal. They are tied into a control module and required by law.

Thanks, Tom...the more I investigate, the more I learn. I appreciate your wisdom and advice. Will look into adding LED's as you suggested.

Re: Foglights - DRL Sign In

Question for Hammer? Are DRLs required at all anywhere in the US anyway? I don't know what year each car I go by is but there sure are plenty without them. Could have sworn a brand new car just yesterday didn't have them and was a Honda hybrid something.

I know for a fact some states require "headlights on" if raining no matter how little it might be raining. I think NY and NJ do that - not here in MA where I would figure would be the most regulated of any place.

Don't know where that car is from but if it was supposed to have DRLs when new then I would just fix that and skip all this crap,

Re: Foglights - DRL Sign In

'06 Tucson does NOT have DRL. I run with headlights virtually all the time as a safety issue. Using the Fogs R/T the headlights would save replacing the expensive HID lamps I installed for better illumination. Halogens just don't cut it here in rural NJ with 70+ year old eyes...and lotsa deer!

Re: Foglights - DRL Sign In

I stand corrected.

They are required in Canada but optional in US

2 Where are DRLs required?
Laws in Canada and many European countries require vehicles to operate with lights on during the daytime. There are two types of laws. Canada's requires vehicles to be equipped with DRLs. Laws in Europe require motorists to turn on their headlights if their vehicles do not have automatic DRLs. In 1972, Finland mandated daytime running lights in winter on rural roads and a decade later made DRLs mandatory year-round. Sweden's law took effect in 1977, Norway's in 1986, Iceland's in 1988, and Denmark's in 1990. Hungary has required drivers on rural roads to operate with vehicle lights on since 1993. Canada requires DRLs for vehicles made after Dec. 1, 1989. No US state mandates DRLs, but some require drivers to operate vehicles with lights on in bad weather.

Your still going to have a problem disconnecting them because they are tied in with a control module with the regular headlights. You can shut them off by jumping out the parking brake warning light. The dash brake light will be on all the time but the DRLs will not.

Re: Foglights - DRL Sign In

#1 Question for Ken,

Were you going to do this yourself no matter the chosen way?

Now that you've said NJ there may be legal issues with lighting. Perhaps the best thing to do is plain ask an inspection place first and most here are also shops and would do the job for you.

I plain can't know if altering the wiring will set off a warning light of a bulb out with this car or not. Some do, some don't.

If separate lights and legal they should be able to be added and leave the OE stuff alone. Again, the reason for LED is they use so little amperage that they are unlikely to cause a problem if separately done.

Again and don't know state by state but the car may have had the option or requirement for DRL depending on where sold. In that case ask your dealer.

I doubt this is that expensive a proposition however doing it wrong sure could be.

Off this topic: NH requires roof, amber lights for all pick up trucks - state law! Same state will allow an 8 year old to buy a 12 gauge shotgun!

I really suggest getting some local info up front before this gets all messed up.

No doubt the Xenon headlights are more $ than regular halogens. How much they and is it worth all this trouble?

It's mostly rural where I am too with narrow back roads full of pot holes and deer too. YES - I want to see the obstacles as early as possible too! These side roads don't paint a stripe down them and on a rainy night are a challenge for even younger eyes too,

Re: Foglights - DRL Sign In

Another thing to look into is whether there are any restrictions on the brilliance of the DRLs. There was a move to make a Federal law limiting that but it fell through. That doesn't mean the individual states didn't restrict it.

Re: Foglights - DRL Sign In

Ah, for the good old days! Used to add foglamps to vehicles, esp. foreign made, all the time w/o difficulty.

You've got me pretty intimidated...I think I'll just leave OEM alone and not tinker. The computer thing with warning lights is beyond me. Dealers won't touch mods. If I find a local shop who does these electrical mods, then maybe.

Thanks again.

Ken
