Flywheel missing teeth?

97 toyota camry 4cylinder 130k. A friend of mine told me that over the past few months his car wasn't starting he was told that it was either his alternator or battery. He went out and bought a battery, after I put it in yesterday he tried to start his car, it made a funny noise the first 2 times and the 3rd time it started. Over the next half hour it started up perfect 4 out of 5 times. Obviously if this not starting/weird noise is still there with a new battery the problem was certainly not his battery and certainly not his alternator. I looked at the belts in his car and when the car starts the belts move somewhat, when it doesn't start the belts barely move. I told him his starter doesn't appear to be engaging. The weird noise sounds somewhat like a starter spinning with the spring engagement mechanism not engaging. Unless there are teeth missing on the flywheel and the starter is spinning and just not catching anything. What are the odds off missing teeth on a flywheel relative to worn spring mechanism on starter? thanks

That depends on how long it is driven this way. The partial engagement would be caused by a bad starter but if the car is still used with the bad starter, it will damage the flywheel also so it's not something to ignore.
