Then today the car was started and idled for a few minutes but wouldn't quit running, but went to a slower speed when the ignition was turned off. I tried to stall the motor but it kept running, smoke started to come out from under the hood. Battery was hot and was ruined. It is a 1998 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder with probably over 150,000 miles. What could have happened and how to fix? Thanks. I would focus on a starter motor that kept running with the key off. Smell the starter motor. It's probably fried.
