1997 Nissan Maxima. Car isn't with me (broken down some place else) so i'm not sure of the mileage and engine size.

The car was driving fine one day and the next it wouldn't start. Tried jumping it and it started but wouldn't hold a charge and would stop running after 5 minutes. Had AAA come by and they jumped it and noticed that no electronic devices are working, i.e., windshield wipers, turn signals, radio, etc. and they tried to put the car in drive and the shifter wouldn't move out of park. Sounds like it is something electrical and not the alternator. Any ideas on this?

I don't want to spend a lot of money fixing a 15 yr old car so any help would be appreciated on what could be causing this.

Bill; The shift interlock must have 12V, or there abouts, to allow it to come out of park when the brake pedal is applied. (a faulty stop lamp switch will cause this problem, also). But, with the other symptoms, it sounds like a low voltage problem. If the battery is dead enough, sometimes, you can 'jump' it 'till you are blue in the face. Take the battery cables off of the battery. Cleaned them and the battery posts thourougly. Charge the battery fully, then test it. Once you get it running again, have the charging system tested. Remember, you can't accurately test a charging system with a low/dead battery.
