Electrical Issue from Cross-Jumping cables on accident. Sign In

Hello, here is my vehicle info: 1989, Dodge, Spirit, 2.5L Mileage/unknown over 100k

Ok it was dark and my battery needed a jump from lights being left on (yes Im an idiot) I jumped the vehicle incorrectly putting the positive on negative and negative on positive. Needless to say this ended with smoke...and a single wire was singed as far as I can tail this wire leads directly to the battery with the main battery cable. I stripped the wire and connected it and wrapped it in electrical tape. What seems to be happening is the battery is getting overcharged while running because It has already killed off another battery it will run for a few days with now problems but then wont start unless it is jumped. I had the alternator tested and it checked out good. So I am at a loss. I know the severed wire has to have something to do with it but what should I replace. Right next to where the wire is severed is what bulge in the wire which is what I believe is a fuseable link.....could that be the issue? I also considered the voltage regulator but Im not sure if my vehicle has an internal or external regulator. Any insight you can provide to my situation will be appreciated.

There is a fusible link or Maxi fuse that runs between the alternator output and the battery that is probably burnt out.
