Door open switch problem

I have a 2006 Hyundai Elantra, and recently the switch that determines if the front passenger-side door is open started acting up. The overhead light would come on, as though the door were open (while we were driving it), and I would get a door open indicator on my instrument panel. I know it was that door because slightly pulling and pushing on the door solved and recreated the problem. I opened it up, and played with the switch (it looks like a grey rubber top), and while it works, it acted somewhat finicky.
Anyway, my question is two-fold:
1. Is this likely to be something easily repaired? I have very little car knowledge and experience, but I'd be willing to attempt a replacement/repair if it's a common and easily solved malady (as it doesn't seem like it would be something too bad). If not, should I ask my local auto-parts store to take a look, or should I go directly to a mechanic?
2. My battery went dead just after I discovered this. I had turned off the overhead light, and can't think of anything else that this problem would trigger that would draw power, but it seems like an awful coincidence. Is it likely that this malfunctioning switch caused my battery to go dead, even though the overhead light was disabled?
I'm happy to provide any more information as needed, but that's all I can think of for now.

General info on door open and lights: Historically the switch was simple on/off in a door jam you could push with your finger or the switch was at the latch inside the door or BOTH to make it a real headache.
Since pulling or re-closing the door made a difference the tolerance is close and yes that might cause a dead battery which in turn is another problem.
Fix might be as simple as adjusting the striker just a tad to make the door close tighter and or latch replacement or fix as seen in hand. Inside the door wires to that latch would be a strong clue and while in a door (panel off) lube everything either WD-40 or spray grease as seen fit for the situation or new parts.
Just know that a dead battery can cause other problems too no matter why they go dead and not a place to go cheap on battery or ask them to get the last day out of - the newer the higher the risks of other problems.
IMO - a battery is only dependable for 3-4 years and takes a hit when drained low shortening life of it even faster....
