Disconnecting cigarette lighter harness on '97 Honda Accord

I'm replacing the console panel on my '97 Accord, in the process of replacing a stolen stereo.
However, the cigarette lighter harness is attached to the old console panel with some sort of faceplate, which I will need to remove and use to attach the cigarette lighter to the new panel.
But I can't get the faceplate off, and I don't want to break the thing.
Has anyone encountered this problem?
