I am having trouble with aftermarket fan controllers, they don't last, so I am going to attempt to control the fans that cool my engine with homemade circuitry. I have attached a document that hopefully will provide all of the information necessary for you to advise me as to the kind/size of the diodes that I will need. If you feel that I am out in "left field" with my idea your advice will be appreciated. Rather than go to manual switches, why don't you just ad a rely to the controller your using. I also stated that fan controllers did not last and were expensive. Did you look at the attachment that went with this post? Those fans draw a lot of amps no matter how you wire it up, if there isn't a relay for the fans then you will have problems down the road.
