Dead Short 1972 Eldorado Convertible Sign In

I have a 72 Eldorado Convertible. There is a 40amp thermal breaker in the fuse box that keeps blowing. First stared when raising the top on a hot day, now continues to blow even when the top is not operated. Circuit includes horn, power seats, locks, seat back latches. When I pull the breaker out and let the car sit for a while, I can plug the breaker back in and get small spark when doing that probably due to the relays on the seat latches engaging. After 10 to 20 seconds, enough current draw builds up to kick out the breaker, if I try to put it back in, it sparks big time indicating dead short, but if I let it sit for a while, it only sparks small, but then blows again. Cant figure out whats wrong. Have wiring diagram in 72 fisher body service manual, but diagram does not include the seat, horn, top, locks circuit at all. Where can I get FULL diagram? Anyone have any ideas what would cause the condition above?

Your just going to have to start disconnecting specific high draw items on that circuit. Something is drawing big time and your going to have to isolate which one. The only things really capable of drawing that much would be the seats and the top.

disconnected horn and all cigarette lighters, problem still there, have not had chance to disconnect top motor and motor relay yet. Need to take the back of the back seat out to get to the motor and relay. That will be next.

I think I would try unplugging the power seats next.

Re: Dead Short 1972 Eldorado Convertible Sign In

Tried the seats first, to no avail, as those were easy to get to and unplug. Thanks for the help so-far. Will keep you informed after I get a chance to tear the seat out and get to that darned top motor. With that much current draw, it could easily have welded the contacts on the relay shut so there is always power to the top motor and if the windings are shorted that would most likely do it. One big clue there is that the first time this happened it happened while I was putting the top up and it stopped halfway up. So from a "captain obvious" point of view, I should probably go there....

Thanks for all the advice.

Yeah, your right. I would think you could get access through the boot behind the back seat without removing the seat.

Not without tearing open the boot that stores the top when down. Attached to back frame of back seat. Can't get at it through the trunk... Sucks... Shouldn't be too bad though, I think just two bolts at the bottom of the back of the seat which also hold the seatbelts at that point.

Smile Fixed it... !!! Found the short, but it was like a needle in a haystack. Was not the top motor, pulled one wire at a time under the dash until no current draw, traced it to a #12 Orange wire, traced it into the door on Drivers side, found it was shorting through the insulation against the sharp edge of a bracket on the inside of the door. It was the main power lead going to the electric lock switch in the door. A little tape, and she is now like new again... YEAH>>>> Thank you everybody for your help.

Re: Dead Short 1972 Eldorado Convertible Sign In

Thanks. I think half the fun of owning a classic is troubleshooting problems. For whatever reason, if I can fix it myself, I feel accomplished and generally more motivated to find the next problem. I now have a problem with my paint that I posted on the body and paint section but I don't think there is a cure for the problem other than strip and re-paint. The other problems I have are the heater control is not working properly and the fan is not blowing except for low. That is going to be even more fun to trace with all those vacuum lines Unsure
