Crossed wires while jumping Sign In

A classic blunder. Late day at work and got to my car after dark and i'd left my lights on, went to jump it w/o checking things as well as I should have and crossed my wires while jumping. Left it on there for a solid 30+seconds while trying to get it started.

It's a '94 toyota pick-up 4 cyl 4 wheel drive, 180k, 2.4 L engine.

I've since fooled around a bit. I replaced the battery, which was toast. That got me interior iights and headlights. Still no lights on my dash. No sound when I turn the key, though my buddy claims he heard a click near the fuse box on the engine. Checked all the fuses. My EFI was out in my engine fuse box. My turn signals was out in my drivers side fuse box. The fuse that was blown for the turn signals (which is the first fuse the wiring hits as it comes in) was seriously melted, and some of the plastic around it melted as well. I went around with a volt sensor. Light went on from the battery, of course. All the fuses seem good (although, strangely, the headlight fuses didn't turn the light on for the volt sensor yet the headlights work) in the engine fuse box, all the fuses on the drivers side don't show any current. The starter gave me a green light as well. So I'm thinking that somewhere between the starter and the drivers side fuse box I have a problem, though not sure. Any clues would be awesome.

Did you use a test light to check the fuses and did you check the large Maxi fuses?

Yea that's what I was checking the fuses with. I'm not very good with electric system mechanics... which ones are the maxi fuses? I check all of the regular fuses both in the engine fuse box and the drivers side fuse box, so driver side fuses include: rear antilock (15a), engine (10a) ignition 7.5a, tail 15a, wiper 20a, gauges 10a, stop 15a, radio 7.5a, cig. 15a, turn 10a, ecu-IG 20a. And in the engine compartment: EFI 15a, Dome 15a, left head 10a,right head 10a, haz/horn 15a and alt 80a. Now Of those my turn fuses were blown and my efi fuse was blown.

Now i JUST went to recheck my fuses and found a blown fuse on my alt 80a. gonna go to the auto shop and replace right now and see what happens. That would be beautiful if that's all that's wrong.

Yep, those are the ones I meant, all 40amp or larger.

So I put in a new fuse for the alternator, which at least got my dash lights going again, but still no sound when I turn the ignition. Are there fuses in the starter spot in the fuse box (I assume so)... if so how do you check those since it's a different kind of fuse w/ a black covering over the plug.

p.s. I meant to say i'm NOT very good with the electric system...

Since those type of fuse have no exposed point to test, you may have to remove them and test them with an ohmmeter. You should also test the terminals for power while it's removed.
