Clutch Kills Engine in 2001 Nissan Sentra GXE Sign In

I have a question related to my Nissan Sentra GXE. This morning I went out and tried to start my car and the battery was completely dead. I called for a boost and we got the car running and I let my foot off the clutch. The car was running and it was in neutral. Once I pushed the clutch in again, however, it killed the engine. We tried to boost it again, I let my foot off the clutch, pressed on the clutch again, same result. After CAA had left, I went out just to try to even start the car and it won't even turn over. The battery is completely dead.
Aside from replacing my battery, do you have any other ideas as to what this could be?
Any advice or suggestions would be sooooo appreciated...

Must be the weather! My guess du jour is that the neg battery cable isn't making good contact with the engine if this goes totally dead like not a sign at all of battery life. Battery probably is toast but what may be happening is pushing the clutch is disconnecting the only ground the battery can find thru the clutch instead of the cable. That has happened to some and fried odd things like speedo cables, clutch cables (yours is hydraulic but might still allow a ground thru it) . I suppose there could be a fault with the switch that enables the starter when clutch is pushed but wouldn't think that would kill the car after it's running??

I think that you are probably right - thanks for responding so quickly! The car was sitting for three days in our cold weather and the battery is the original that came in the car - time for a new one. I am having it towed to the garage tomorrow so will let you know. I *hope* that it is as simple as the battery...

There's almost no way the battery can be any good. That's a must even if not the whole problem. Seriously - batteries are not worth much after 3 years - the dependability rate drops off sharply after that. All time record for me was one that just made 8 years old.

Note: they age from the day they are made not just the day you install one. All batteries have a date embossed on the casing either clear or coded. Get a fresh one - some can be very old when you get them (less than 6 months or request another) Most stores won't sell a 1 year old battery but will just give up and recycle them. They know exactly how old they are because that is the warranty date if you don't have paperwork!
