96 Jeep Cherokee. 6 cylinder. Recently the GEN light went on, before I pulled out the alternator I had the battery checked. It was bad so I bought a new one. The GEN light is off but I was getting in the 13.7 Volt range on the battery/alternator so I figured I would change the alternator now while I still have time (summer school starts soon). With a brand new alternator (and battery) I'm still getting in the 13.7 range. The terminals are clean. Based on what I'm reading on this forum, the voltage is too low (especially since its brand new). What else could be causing this? thanks

The voltage is not too low. 13.5 to 14.8 would be acceptable, depending on the condition of the battery. Remember, the voltage regulator for your car is incorporated into the PCM, not the alternator.

Agree, 13.7 is ok when all is settled down after starting.

Just a note and always (stupid to buy new toys for cars while retired) have a fast digital volt meter in a power port which is real voltage or dang close and don't and never did driver customer cars more than checking that a fix was in fact fixed so more noticed on my own. The voltage will spike for a short while right after start up within norms then settle down - all within normal ranges as HT just said.

Seems like this stuff is all fine so far. Easy on replacing stuff like alternators unless pretty dang well known old one is bad as many will be re-manufactured and you might get one that the builder didn't catch some funky problem with the one they re-manned and be worse off for changing it,
