Changing ignition on 05 pontiac montana sv6 Sign In

Do you have to get the vehicle reprogramed if you change the ingnition switch on a 05 Pontiac Montana SV6,,The van will flash the dash lights on and off,,sometimes it quits sometimes not,,starts right back up,,could be sitting idling or going on the road when it does it. Might do it several times in a few miles,,then not do it again for weeks. Sometimes the blinkers are working but not flashing on the dash, could be showing high beams on when actualy the low beams are on. Any help would be appreciated,,Thanks

No, that's not a programming issue. What was changed to start with, the switch or the lock and why was it changed?

Re: Changing ignition on 05 pontiac montana sv6 Sign In

It hasn't been changed,,I'm thinking that the ignition is the problem,,sometimes when you turn it off, it keeps running until you pull the key out, then it stops. So I might change the igntion and see if that solves the problem.

The electrical part, not the lock.

Do you mean the Passkey unit?? It's unplugged and didn't make any difference

Re: Changing ignition on 05 pontiac montana sv6 Sign In

No, I meant the electrical ignition switch and not the lock and tumbler. The car can't run without the Passkey operational so don't unplug that.

Re: Changing ignition on 05 pontiac montana sv6 Sign In

That can't be. The PCM will not turn the fuel on unless it receives the password from the security system unless you have some sort of aftermarket override device.

Re: Changing ignition on 05 pontiac montana sv6 Sign In

It appears that it is possible for the engine to run without communication to the theft module if it was already running when the communication was first lost.

VEHICLE THEFT DETERRENT (VTD) DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

The vehicle theft deterrent system functions are provided by the theft deterrent control module(VTD). The vehicle theft deterrent system prevents vehicle operation if a valid (learned) transponder PASS-Key(R)III (PK3) ignition key is not used to start the vehicle. The VTD module has an exciter that is part of the VTD module as an assembly. The PK3 key has a transponder embedded in the plastic head of the key. The exciter is an antenna which is made up of wire coils which surround the ignition lock cylinder. The PCM enables engine starting when it receives a valid (learned) password from the VTD module via the class 2 serial data circuit. The components of the vehicle theft deterrent system are as follows:
  • Theft deterrent control module (VTD)
  • Powertrain control module (PCM)
  • Ignition key (Transponder)
  • Ignition lock cylinder
  • Security indicator

Theft Deterrent Control Module (VTD)
Vehicles with steering column mounted ignition switches have the exciter integral with the theft deterrent control module (VTD) which is located within the steering column. Vehicles with instrument panel mounted ignition switches have exciter modules separate from the VTD module with the vehicle wiring harness connecting the two. The VTD module for vehicles with instrument panel mounted ignition switches is located within the instrument panel. The VTD module can learn up to ten keys (transponder values).

The VTD module uses the following inputs, battery voltage, ignition switched voltage and ground circuit. The VTD module uses the following outputs, password exchange with the PCM (fuel enable/disable) via class 2 serial data circuit.

When an ignition key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder, the transponder embedded in the head of the key is energized by the exciter coils surrounding the ignition lock cylinder. The energized transponder transmits a signal that contains its value, which is received by the VTD module. The VTD module then compares this value to a value stored in memory and performs one of the following functions:
  • If the transponder value is correct, the VTD module sends a class 2 message containing the module's enable password to the PCM.
  • If the transponder value is incorrect, the VTD module sends a class 2 message containing a disable password to the PCM.
  • If the VTD module is unable to measure the ignition key transponder value for one second (due to a damaged or missing pellet or a damaged exciter), it sends a class 2 message containing a disable password to the PCM.

IMPORTANT: If the PCM is unable to communicate with the VTD module (loss of class 2 state of health) after the vehicle has started, the module will consider itself malfunctioning and enter a fail enable state and illuminate the Security Indicator. The vehicle will not stall or stop running. If the PCM is in a fail enable state when the ignition is turned to OFF, it will remain fail enabled until the next time the vehicle is started. If the PCM is fail enabled the theft deterrent system is NOT active and the vehicle will start. The PCM will remain fail enabled until class 2 communication with the VTD module is restored.

Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
The powertrain control module (PCM) verifies that the password received from the theft deterrent control module (VTD) via the Class 2 serial data circuit is correct. The PCM can learn only one enable password. If the enable password is correct, the PCM enables the starting and fuel delivery systems.

The PCM disables the starting and fuel delivery systems if any of the following conditions occur:
  • The enable password is incorrect.
  • The system disable password is sent by the VTD module.
  • No passwords are received - there is no communication with the VTD module.

Are you getting any kind of security indicator when you try to start it?

Re: Changing ignition on 05 pontiac montana sv6 Sign In

I started it this AM totally dark out,, No light flashing on the dash where the two little sensors are. Van has been working great for the last six days,,but this is usual,,will work good for up to a month or so and then take a freak and act up for a few days.

You're not going to see anything if the problem isn't present at the moment. You can't fix what isn't broken.

Re: Changing ignition on 05 pontiac montana sv6 Sign In

If the van is acting up and quitting,,I should see a light flashing up on the dash if the problem is a security issue?? If so then it could mean a faulty ignition? Thanks

Re: Changing ignition on 05 pontiac montana sv6 Sign In

No, not at all. The security light refers to a starting problem only. This issue really needs to be diagnosed professionally.
