There's actually a couple things happening with this ol' car, and maybe they're related. First, the interior light sometimes refuses to come on -- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This has been going on for a few weeks. Then yesterday the bright lights started acting weird. They will work if I pull the switch towards me (in the position where you have to keep it held), but if I push the switch away (for them to stay on without me holding it) they do not come on at all. Does this scream "alternator problem"? I'm really hoping it doesn't!

Ah, thanks for that reply. Now, being an intrepid sort but one who doesn't know a whole lot about cars, is the switch the kind of thing I can fix easily myself? Or should I leave it for the mechanic?

If the site Jim gave don't help buy a haynes repair manual lots of step by step w/ illustrations personally I think you can do it but you have to rent a steering wheel puller both these items are at Autozone and if decide to diy post your progress will help on the steps you are unsure about

Your interior light - Remove the globe, and squeeze the 2 metal contacts that held it a little closer. ONe at a time of course. This should increase the hold on the bulb when you put it back (should be hard to put back) that should help you. The lights thing is already taken care of.

Hey, thanks all for the valuable info (although my mechanic's not going to thank you, I'm sure). I'm tackling it this weekend and will duly report back my progress. Cheers!
