Brake Lights / Switch not working Sign In

I have a 2000 gmc sierra 350. None of my brake lights, the ability to shift the truck into gear also is gone, as well as the cruise control working. I did some trouble shooting and found out if I replaced the brake switch, the lights and everything else will work for a while, maybe a day, maybe a few weeks but then will quit again. I can then replace with another switch even an old one that I had already taken out and it works again. It seems that something is either overloaded or shorting out and when I change out seems to reset itself. Any Ideas?

Guess: Does this have trailer lighting that could be stressing out the switch and need work back there?

I think you can override the shift interlock by just turning key slightly towards the "run" position and it will shift. The GM trucks change some things in MY 2000. Is the brake light switch showing signs of being too hot?

Re: Brake Lights / Switch not working Sign In

Check the white wire leaving the brake light switch that goes to the turn signal switch. I have seen a number of these wires that have been partly cut where the wire was crimped onto the connector terminal. The insulation of the wire looks intact but the wire inside is cut and it’s the insulation holding it together.
What’s likely happening is that while you’re under there replacing the switch; you’re disturbing the harness which in-turn reconnects the broken wire inside the insulation. After finding and tracing this wire from the brake light switch to the turn signal switch; try giving it a fairly hard pull, close to either connector. If the wire inside is broken the insulation will be somewhat stretchy until it breaks.

Well I checked out the wiring to harness and it looks good. even used a jumper wire without luck. Also disconnected trailer light plug adapter to see if that was a problem. Is there anything else in the wiring path that would reset itself when I remove the brake switch?

Re:oo GMC Sierra- Brake Lights / Switch not working Sign In

It doesn't need to look or feel good you need to know if power even gets to one side of the switch. Brake lights should have power all the time in everything I know of - keys in or not. If no power than we start the hunt as to why. I know it's a fussy spot and as Dan mentioned the wire inside may simply be broken. Might feel ok and be broken so you need to know if power makes it that far.

Was this factory wired for trailer towing and you are using an adaptor direct to it or all messed with for a large trailer with brakes involved?

PS: I can't look back while posting but have you checked the fuse - not by looks but does it have power on both sides?
