Well we have been having cold weather here at home . The last few weeks my 83 Blazer with a 6.2 would turn over very slowly but would start . I have over 200 thousand on my engine . Well after running it awhile I would go in somewhere and if I left it for more than 10 minutes when I would come out it wouldn't start .It would turn over very slowly . Now after I let it sit for about 1 hour then the glow plugs would come on and it would start just very slowly . If the glow plugs don't come on it has to be jumped .Okay I have a Solar battery tester and voltage tester . I went out one morning and hook it to the two batteries . I input 1600 cold cranking amps . It went through the test and said abtteries bad replace and showed 1000 cold cranking amps . Okay so I seperated the batteries and tested each one . One tested at 249 cold cranking amps and the other at 649 cold cranking amps . Now these are 800 CCA batteries .So I charge the low one for few hours and come back and it shows 256 CCA .So I think it's bad and it's 1 year old . I leave and go out on a day trip come back and it's up too 629 CCA .What's happening here ? So I take it to the parts store they test it and say it's okay and take it home . This is a NAPA store and they use a napa tester . So I go home put it back in and test it and it's got 254 CCA and it turns over slowly . Okay so I go out today and it won't satrt again turning over slowly and it just won't work . So I charge up the batteries and get it going . I run the equipment check on my tester and it says the starter drew 10.5 volts andis good and the Alternator is putting out 14.9 volts at idle and at idle with lights and heater on 14.4 volts . So what am I overlooking and why did my cold cranking amps go up from just sitting ? My tester showed the batteries fully charged but the CCA's were low ? This is my work rig and I need to depend on it . Thanks

Most auto parts store tester only test voltage. It requires cranking amps to turn a car over.

Just to add: I'm not a diesel tech but have a clue. Dang things hate cold weather as you must know by now. I know because of incredible compression required that amps from batteries must be right up there. Naturally a cold battery has less to offer too - reason for the CCA ratings. Gotta think amps not just volts.
Suggestion on batteries if needed and probably does. Try hard to get a matched set as one old one and one new one isn't really good and if old one goes bad on you can take out the new one - suks.
I feel like a hermit but OMG have battery prices shot up. Stinks but a diesel especially needs awesome amps and quality batteries.
One more - any vehicle but especially this - keep spraying known clean cable connection with something like WD-40 as it critical to all but more with this to stay with good connections.

I suspect one of two things:
1) A bad battery or batteries.
2) A bad connection.
This will require some on site troubleshooting with a good volt meter and battery tester.

Okay guys I took the alternator in to O'Rielly parts and they said I had the voltage but no amps . So I replaced that with a 78 amp unit . Seems like that wouldn't be enough ? Looked at all my connections and 2 of the cables I recently replaced .I took the batteries to Napa for replacement they tested them for amps . They are rated 800 CCA's and one came up 749 and the other 726 . Now I checked them at home and got 249 and 243 CCA's . Could they increase in amps while sitting ? Okay now I go out get the store go in comeout 20 minutes latter motor turns over slow and won't start till it gets cold enough to trun on the glow plugs . Starter ? anyone think starter ? Thanks for the help !!!!
