Hi,
Got an electrical problem with an 2005 Hyundai Elantra. The battery cables got hooked up wrong. The motor turned in the wrong direction by touching the battery several times until it was noticed.
When hooked up correctly and the ignition key was turn on, there was a strong electrical smell in the interior. I actually saw a wisp of smoke from under the dash. The battery also started to smoke. Turned it off. When the ignition key was turned on, I also noticed the speed odometer and tach spiked and pegged to the end and then dropped down.
Obviously something is now wrong. Is there a certain component that would burn out or several, or could it just be anything? Is there a particular way to proceed? Is there any kind of fuse or reverse polarity unit that prevents major damage from just such a mind lapse?

Your engine didn't turn backwards. That's not even possible. You could have fried most any component in the car. Check all the main fuses and fusible links but this could get into a whole lot more.

I am sorry, I didn't mean to say the engine turned backwards, I am just beside myself right now. I can't believe I did that.
It is at a mechanic now. I was just wondering besides fuses, if diagnostic check might pin point items fried or if anyone knows of anything specific to that model of what would happen. I hate for this to turn into a such a cost to where maybe the car might be considered junking.

There is no rule for that. It just depends what melted first and whether that provided a path to something else to get damaged. he's just going to have to trace any circuit that are not working.
