Bad alternator or something else? Sign In

I have a 1989 pontiac 6000 le 2.8L with about 90,000 miles. My voltage warning light came on and the car still ran for about a day. Eventually it did loose power like it was the alternator (lights dimming until the evetuall stop). Jumping the car would only last briefly so it seems it is running just off the battery (battery is under 2 years old). The problem is that I just replaced the alternator about 6 months ago when the old one had seized. The alternator that is currently in the car is not seized but everything is pointing to it being bad. So my question is, is it just a bad alternator or could I have some other problem?
Thanks.

It does point to the alternator again. Make sure belt is tight enough and connections and wires are in good shape. You have the evidence but a voltage check with a simple meter would show some info - like the operating volatage with nothing on and can it maintain 13.5 +/- with some items on - I doubt it.

You should have a warranty on that new of an alternator which included the regulator on most GMs (could be that too or diodes) but you bought a whole unit so they should give you a whole unit.

Many parts places will bench test the alt for you,

Thanks, that is what I thought but I just wanted to check. I will take the alternator in to get tested. Now I just have to find the reciept!
Thanks again.
