"Backup Lights"

Hi folks,
I have a 1989 mazda 323 Base hatchback sohc--1.6L 5spd. manual: My situation is this: My backup lights do not lite up. I've check fuses they-r- ok. for what i can assume is that iam not getting power to the bulb sockets, but i do not know where to begin surching or testing.
Any help will be appreciated--thank you in advance.

Automatic or manual? You have a volt meter or 12 volt test lamp and know how to use it?

I'am sory--It is a 5spd. manual. To answer your post, I do have both instruments and not too sure about using them.

You really need to find someone that knows how to use them. They will help make finding your problem a whole lot easier.
One thing you can do is check the reverse switch. It is screwed into the transmission and has two wires red/white and black/yellow. You really need to see if you have power to the black/yellow wire at the switch connector. If you do, you can jump the harness terminals together to see if the reverse light come on. If they do, more than likely there is either a problem with the switch itself or the component in the transmission that pushes on the switch.

Thank you Descrete--for your help. I still need to find a way to test whatever i need to test to find the problem as to why the lights are not working. The switch a bought from a yunk yard, maybe that switch is bad-who knows?.

Replace the light bulbs. Sometimes light bulbs loose connectivity to light up. or bulbs burn out. I have seen bulbs look good but turned out no good.

Thanks Discretesignals:
I found the problem--The switch harness has been cut right at the switch. I got a new switch, but I have a bigger delema, There are no plugs in the engine compartment to match the plug that comes from the switch. Any ideas on that issue. I really appreciate all your help on this, any way we can fix the new problem?...

Do you mean the connector at the switch itself? If the wiring is cut at the end of the connector, you might be able to take the connector apart and remove the terminals. Then you might be able to solder the wire to the remaining piece that is still attached to the terminal.
edit:
I reread that a couple of times. Do you mean the new switch's connector doesn't plug into the vehicle harness connector?

Hi--Yes the new switch's connector can not be plug into the vehicle harness connector, because there is no connector that matches the switch connector. If that makes any sense!

Yes it does, identical. If you notice the plug on the switch. on the vehicle harness there are no plugs that look like that..

I don't know if it was, or not. Iam sure at one time it had to be--if it was where in the world did they plug the switch to???
