BMW wiper problem

I am having a problem with the wipers on a BMW 318i E46 1999
There is no wiper action in any of the positions on the stalk, and only intermittent wash action, I know some of these use a rain sensor, but as there is no fuse in the section for the sensor, i presume that this model does not have one. There is no allocated fuse for the wipers, in the fuse box section, are there fuses elsewhere?
