Alternator/Starting Trouble

My son has a 1987 Chevy S-10 4X4, 2.8L, 6cyl., 5 speed that was gifted to him. We are trying make a project out of it for some father/son bonding. When we picked it up from the giver, the battery was dead. We had the battery and alternator tested at Auto Zone. Alternator passed, battery was replaced. Two days later the battery died again. Had it tested and it nearly exploded on the machine. Got a new battery and it soon died. We took truck to Auto Zone and the alternator was putting out at 12.10 volts. Bought remanufactured alternator, installed it, tested it on the truck and it came out at 12.10 volts. The parts guy recommended maybe cutting out the fusible link. Another guy suggested a "self-exciter". Can you please offer an experienced opinion on what my next step should be???

3 Batteries! Thats crazy! If the ALT has been test and charges at 12.10v, that is 2 volts too love. A normal ALT in my experiences charges at about 14v. There must be something wrong with the wiring from the ALT to the battery. See if you can get a continuity test on the battery cable running from the battery post on the ALT to the Battery. OR you could just cut this step out by replacing it. The max it will cost you is about $50 (thats here in oz anyways) I would start with replacing that. It looks like this:
