Air Bag Light On - Sebring 2004 Sign In

Chrysler Sebring Touring 2004, 2.7L, 66,000: The air bag light stays on. I have had it repaired twice. The first time about 2 1/2 years ago and the dealer replaced part of the seat belt mechanism. The second time, about 8 months ago, the dealer repaired the electrical connector ( a pin was collapsed). Someone suggested I take the positive battery cable off. I did that and the light turned off for only one day and it came back on. I understand that this may be a common problem with Chryslers. Any suggestions out there.

Every time you start your car, the air bag system goes through a self test. It it doesn't pass the test for any reason, the computer will put the light on, store a trouble code to identify what area the problem is in and disable the system. When you disconnect the battery, you are simply erasing all the diagnostics that the computer just did for you. It comes right back on for the next key cycle when it fails the test again. What you have to do is have the ABS computer scanned to retreive the stored trouble codes and they will point you in the right direction.
