1998 Chevrolet C1500 V8 5.0 123,000 First, the truck died on the road. Jumped it off, took the cables off and bam. Truck died again. Alternator, I said. Towed it to the house, put a new alternator on it. Naturally, the battery is dead, so I hooked it up the battery charger, started the truck - purrs like a kitten. Got out and took the charger off, twenty or so seconds later, the truck died. I looked a little further and noticed that the wire going to the battery from the alternator was a little frayed and black, not bright copper. So I stripped the end of the wire, reattached it to the battery. Jumped it off, Took the charger off. Truck ran for about two minutes, then cut off. What could the problem possibly be???

You're making a couple serious mistakes here. NEVER remove a battery cable from a running vehicle. That may have worked years ago but can fry every computer in today's cars. Second, never use the alternator to charge up a dead battery. They are designed to maintain a battery, not recharge a dead one. These newer alternators will burn out when run at max like that. Use a battery charger before starting the vehicle. The main power wire that you refer to has a fusible link spliced into the wire at one end and if it burns out, it can only be replaced with fuse wire, never eliminated or replaced with regular wire. To find out if it is burnt out, test for power at the main terminal of the alternator with the key OFF. If no power, the link is burnt out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

always we would check codes - post ALL codes. How are your elec troubleshooting skills - test light, DVOM, diagram reading? Sounds like you have done nothing to check BATTERY or battery connections - CK large wire at alt is there 12v? http://www.revbase.com/...wnloadPdf?id=1103218
